Some schools can become very worried around prom time about how much money their students are spending on their prom nights. One of the biggest expenses the schools see is the limo hire and they may see this as being the biggest expense because the prom limos are often huge party bus SUV limousines, or because the feel that their students’ parents could have dropped them off for free.
Therefore, some schools are trying to regulate how much money their students spend on their proms and one Californian college has even tried to ban limousines from the grounds. The school told their students that limousines would not be allowed on the grounds during the prom night or the graduation ceremonies because there was no space for the limousines to safely come in, drop off students and wait to take them home.
When local limousine hire companies started receiving cancellations from these students because they thought they could not arrive in a chauffeur driven limo to their prom, the limo hire companies contacted the school and the local authorities to find out what was going on. When questioned, the administrators of the prom venue told the limo hire companies that they wanted to ban the limousines because there was no room to manoeuvre, there would be traffic congestion and the decision had been made in the interests of everyone’s safety.
However, when limo hire companies pointed out that the prom venue was public property, that the limousines don’t wait on the grounds while the prom is in progress but around the corner and that cancelling prom limos was financially devastating to the local limo hire companies the administration had a new reason. They said that the school administrators thought that prom limousine hire was unfair to the students who could not afford it and divided the rich and poor students.
The issue was resolved when there was a separate parking lot set up at the prom venue for the limousines and the administrators were convinced that the students were taught to be accepting of each other’s differences.
